Deployment of recycled plastic contributes to CO2 reduction at Nexans

In a recent development, KIVO Flexible Plastics, in close collaboration with Nexans, has launched a project aimed at reducing its carbon footprint through the use of sustainable film manufactured from recycled plastic (PCR). This initiative, which stems from our participation in the Circular Plastics Alliance, again shows that chain cooperation is crucial in making the packaging industry more sustainable.

This collaboration between KIVO and Nexans, a world leader in the cable industry, has resulted in the implementation of shrink wrap consisting of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. The impact of this switch is significant, with a target annual savings of 10,000 kg CO2 equivalent for Nexans Benelux, equivalent to the benefits of planting approximately 400 trees.

The decision to change to a film with 30% PCR content was made after extensive analysis and comparisons, supported by a special CO2 footprint tool developed by KIVO in collaboration with CE Delft. This tool, using the Cradle-to-Consumer approach, demonstrated the environmental benefits of this change, taking into account the full life cycle of the film.

Quality preservation was a crucial factor in this process. The chosen mix meets the stringent requirements of the proposed PPWR standards, which aim to reduce packaging waste and promote a circular economy within the European Union.
