Innovation through minimisation and integration of recycled materials
In the meat sector, food safety is crucial. At the same time, companies are under pressure to reduce their environmental impact and comply with increasingly stringent European legislation. A producer in the meat sector has teamed up with KIVO to take an important step: switching to a tubular film with BRC-certified 30% Post Industrial Recycled (PIR) material sourced from our own recycling facility, KIVO Recycling.
The application
Bag-Inserter tubular film is processed automatically on Pattyn Packaging's packaging lines. Here, the tube is made into a bag and automatically placed in boxes or crates, after which they are filled with fish, meat and vegetables, among others.
The solution
This grade contains 30% PIR material, produced at KIVO's own recycling site. This composition is:
- BRC-certified and thus suitable for food packaging;
- Completely food-safe, unlike PCR (Post Consumer Recycled) which is legally prohibited for direct-food contact;
- Technically identical in processability to traditional films.
The film meets all strict requirements in the meat industry and allows it to run on existing machines without additional modifications.
Impact of this innovation
- Significant carbon reduction: By using PIR, customers significantly reduce their carbon footprint.
- Lower dependence on virgin material: A direct saving on fossil resources.
- 100% processability: Customers experience no loss of production or additional downtime.
Future vision
Together with customers, KIVO continues to optimise its packaging portfolio. Further reduction of thicknesses, use of bio-based materials and expansion of PIR use are parts of this strategy. The combination of in-house recycling capacity and cooperation within the meat sector enables KIVO to innovate at scale.
