Biodegradable Plastics

From mai 2004 onwards more and more packaging and products made out of
biodegradable materials can be found in the shops. The production of
biodegradable plastics saves basis raw materials and energy and the products are
compostable as well. Those products can be deposed in the green (bio) bin but
permission for doing this can be different per town. In cases the biodegradable
materials are deposed in land fillings the use of it doesnot harm the
environment. Biodegradable plastics are made out of agricultural waste or by
refining potatoes, corn or whey. Traditionally plastics are made out of crude oil.
Not only the fact that it is a renewable source, the amount of energy needed to produce biodegradable plastics
is lower as well. The use of biodegradable plastics has enormous environmental
advantages with respect to traditional plastics amongst others a contribution to
limit the effect of global warming. Packaging made out of biodegradable plastics
can be recognized by the seedlinglogo. It concerns mainly garbage bags, packaging for fruit
and vegetables but possibly other packaging and no refundable products as well.
Some of those products have the logo already and can be found in the shelf of the supermarkets.
Products with this logo are compostable.
Collection via the green ( bio) bin is not effecting the compost process or the
quality of the compost negatively. The use of biodegradable plastic is good for
the environment, also in cases it is collected together with the not bio part of
the domestic waste. Because of its high caloric value and being substitute of
fossil fuel, incinerating with energy recycling gives durable energy and because
of that it is a good alternative.
